About Toto
The group Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs at the time) as well as bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. Their name is derived from the Latin word meaning "all encompassing," the group was intent on exploring every musical style.
In 1981 Toto's third album Turn Back was a flop However, they resurface with their fourth album Isolation which contains two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour made them a household name around the globe.
After a hiatus of a few years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in the year 1986. The album is different from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and includes some heavy rock. This album was their first to be certified platinum in North America.
In the course of recording the fifth album, the group loses its manager and is faced with financial problems. They decide to change their name and make a new album using a new producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and gives the band much-needed boost.
In 1999, the band release Mindfields and begin an extensive tour around the world. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief break, Toto resumes recording and goes on to record their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes an original cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band performing their hit song Africa on a recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
